LED lightbulb technology was first made available to consumers in the late 1960's and has been used for specialty applications for several decades. Recently, an LED lightbulb product line has been released to the public which has lightbulbs designed to replace your incandescent lightbulbs. This new product line includes an LED lightbulb for just about every application in your home and business. The new LED lightbulb product line includes bulbs in many of the standard lightbulb shapes and sizes that you are already familiar with. The LED lightbulb is available in levels of brightness that can be used in place of incandescent 5 watt bulbs all the way up to the equivalent of an 100 watt incandescent bulb. An LED lightbulb uses considerably less electricity than both the incandescent and compact fluorescent lightbulbs do. For instance, the LED lightbulb equivalent to the 100 watt incandescent lightbulb uses only 13 watts of power instead of 100. The way an LED lightbulb works is an interesting technology, since it is constructed of a bank of light-emitting diodes which become excited by an electric flow and create energy that is released as light. The light output of LED's are much lower than incandescent filaments or CFL's gaseous emitters. However, this is countered by designing the LED lightbulb with many diodes grouped together which combine to produce one wide soft white glow. These diodes are extremely durable compared to fragile filaments and gaseous elements in other lightbulbs, so the need for replacements after breakage is greatly reduced. Possibly the most notable difference between traditional lighting and LED lighting is the long lifespan. Compared to traditional bulbs which need to be replaced every few months, the LED lightbulb is a labor saver since it only needs to be replaced once every decade or two. In fact, some LED light bulbs are reported to last up to 50 years. The LED lightbulb provides approximately 30,000 hours of light, which is considerably longer than CFL's that produce 8,000 hours of light and incandescent bulbs which last for only 1,000 hours. Further, across its lifespan, the LED lightbulb doesn't diminish in light intensity or output level as do fluorescent lights. A growing number of lighting product manufacturers are becoming interested in producing LED lightbulb technology, so competition is likely to drive costs down as less expensive production methods are developed. Until then, customers will pay several times more for an LED lightbulb than its incandescent equivalent. The longevity of the LED lightbulb will still save money over its lifetime when you consider the energy savings as well as the diminished replacement costs. With warranties guaranteeing a great portion of the advertised lifespan of an LED lightbulb, consumers will have more confidence in this new technology and start giving it a try. While it may be painful on your pocketbook to pay significantly more for an LED lightbulb when the old fashioned bulbs are only a few dollars, but budget-savvy consumers who do the math will realize that with energy and replacement savings, and LED lightbulb is going to save them significant amounts of money over its lifetime and will most likely opt for paying more upfront to realize greater savings down the road.
