If you are like many do-it-yourself home improvement buffs, you may have thought about installing a bathroom vanity in your home. A vanity can bring a new look to a bathroom. Knowing some simple steps can help you install a vanity with ease. This article will focus on upgrading or replacing a vanity with a vanity top which includes a molded sink. In order to install the new vanity and sink, you will need to remove the existing sink and vanity. An important first step in removing the vanity is to turn off the water at the shut-off valves. You can then disconnect the supply line from the valves and detach the drain trap from the drain pipe. Check for caulking used between the sink and the vanity top to hold out water. The sink can then be lifted from the vanity top. Next, remove the screws that hold the vanity top to the cabinet. You should also cut the caulking between the backsplash of the vanity top and the wall. This will allow for easy removal of the vanity top without damaging the wall finish. Even if there is no caulking between the wall and the vanity cabinet, a bead of paint may keep them from separating easily. Score the paint with a utility knife to enable the vanity to be moved without damaging the wall. Once the vanity has been completely removed, the area can be cleaned and prepared for the new vanity to be installed. If the P-trap assembly will be replaced as part of your vanity project, you may want to do that prior to installing the vanity cabinet so that you have more space to work with. The vanity cabinet does not need to be anchored to the floor and can now be set in place in preparation for installing the vanity top and sink. A vanity top with a molded sink may be sold with parts included for installation. If not, you may need to purchase some basic items for your vanity project. These may include flexible supply lines, a faucet and drain assembly or even PVC drain pipes or P-trap. It is a good idea to have these items on hand before beginning the vanity project. Once the vanity cabinet is in place and you are ready to install the vanity top and sink, you may want to connect the hardware to the sink before placing it on the vanity. It is easier to connect the fittings before the vanity top is put in place. Attach the faucet to the vanity sink and secure the washers. Next, you can put the vanity top and sink in place and secure the top to the vanity cabinet. The supply lines can then be connected to the valves and the drain trap can be connected to the drain pipe. Be sure to use plumbers putty to seal the drain trap. With the vanity installed and the supply and drain lines connected you are ready to turn the water on and check for leaks and make adjustments as needed. To protect your walls you can place a bead of caulking around the top of the vanity backsplash. You can save money by installing your own new vanity and vanity top with sink.
