When you get serious about dollhouses as a hobby or as a collector then it becomes difficult to accept plastic as a viable material. Even for little girls who play with dollhouses there is nothing that compares to a wooden dollhouse. Wooden dollhouses just make more sense than plastic for at least 8 reasons: 1) Durability- The most popular material for building dollhouses is wood...and rightfully so. Wooden dollhouses are incredibly durable which makes for not only a perfect toy but also an excellent collectable. With a little care and love dollhouses that are made from wood will last from generation to generation. It is not uncommon for girls when they grow up to become mothers that they share their favorite toys with their daughters. Frequently those treasures are wooden dollhouses. 2) Authenticity- Without question, these dollhouses provide more realism than plastic houses. That authenticity is not just noticeable to the eye but also to the touch. Wood better captures the feel of real life. 3) Versatility- Plastic dollhouses generally come furnished, painted, and accessorized. In other words...what you see is what you get. But with wooden dollhouses your imagination can run wild. Think it and create it. Paint it as you like, make custom draperies, add furnishings as you want, and even add lighting for greater realism. 4) Changeability- Your dollhouse can be changed to fit your mood and the changing times. Just as you can remodel the home in which you live so it is with a dollhouse that has been crafted with wood. 5) Fix-ability- Plastic dollhouses are difficult if not impossible to repair. Lost or broken parts are very hard to replace. But with wood repairs are easier and materials are always available. 6) Variability- Plastic dollhouses are primarily toys but the wooden versions can be used as toys, hobbies, or collecting. 7) Quality- The craftsmenship that frequently goes into the construction of wooden dollhouses provides for a quality product that is incredibly impressive. 8) Dream-ability- (not sure there is such a word) With a wooden dollhouse you can literally have your dream house. The life-sized version may have illuded you due to cost restrictions...but in minature the sky is the limit. Now, you may be saying that there is no way that you could build a wooden dollhouse from scratch. Neither can I. But with a little patience and an investment of time you CAN build your own dollhouse from a kit. Even working with kits leaves room for considerable creativity and imagination. There are so many wonderful products available for accessorizing your project. If you are concerned about the "level of difficulty" of a dollhouse from wood project then check with the retailer or manufacturer. In many cases they publish information on how difficult a particular project may be. When no published info is available then just ask. Most of the vendors that sell these products are experts in their field with a solid grasp on what it takes to assemble each kit. If you have been looking for something that will delight your daughter and granddaughter then a wooden dollhouse is an excellent choice.
