How And Why The Security+ Certification Fits In The Dod 8570 Directive

Business
The Department of Defense (DoD) established guidelines for all members of its Information Assurance (IA) workforce in 2004 when it released the DoD 8570 Directive. The DoD 8570 Directive was entitled, “Information Assurance (IA) Training, Certification, and Workforce Management." The directive is also known as the Information Assurance Workforce Improvement Program.

The security of data has grown extremely important with the Department of Defense since the events of September 11, 2001. Ensuring that its workforce involved with sensitive and personal data is well-trained and hold the appropriate security certifications has been a mandate of the DoD. The DoD 8570 Directive further defined what security certifications are necessary for the IA professionals within the agency.

The guidance outlined in DoD 8570 applied to military, civilian, foreign nationals, government contractors and other personnel that are involved in the IA arena. The guidelines required that DoD baseline certifications were met by IA personnel by the year 2010. They included establishing a minimum skill level, making IA workforce available to the soldier force and warfighters, creation of formal training and certification programs, and enhancing the knowledge base of the IA workforce through experience and formal training.

The CompTIA Security+ certification was developed by the non-profit Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA). CompTIA was established in 1982 by several microcomputer dealerships. The Security + certification provides the IA professional with proficiency and capabilities in system security, network infrastructure, access control, cryptography, compliance and operation security, troubleshooting, and other facets of information systems security.

CompTIA Security+ was chosen as one of four certifications to be used to satisfy the requirements of the DoD 8570 Directive. One of the key factors in the selection of CompTIA Security+ by the DoD was that its certification standards offered the knowledge base and skill sets to met the requirements of the DoD 8570 Directive. CompTIA was selected by the DoD because it is a leading provider of vendor-neutral certifications. It is widely recognized by many of the companies that make up the computer industry for the strength of its certification standards.

CompTIA Security+ was also chosen because its certification programs are recognized and used worldwide. The programs have been developed by industry leaders from all facets of the industry. This includes the private sector, educational institutions and government entities.

CompTIA certifications were developed to give entry-level workforce a means to develop their credentials for higher level certifications. CompTIA Security+ certification is also tailored to provide different certifications for the different levels of experience and responsibilities of the IA workforce. The CompTIA certificates are universally accepted as pre-requisites by entities such as Microsoft, ISACA, and Novell for those seeking higher-level certifications.

CompTIA Security+ certification meets the certification requirements of DoD 8570 that addresses four categories of the government IA workforce. The categories include Information Assurance Manager (IAM), Information Assurance Technician (IAT), Information Assurance System Architect and Engineer (IASAE) and Computer Network Defense (CND). CompTIA Security+ training is available for each of these categories with certifications that apply to each area and at different experience levels.

The DoD 8570 Directive has given the Department of Defense clear guidance on how to bring its IA workforce into compliance with standards already in use by other entities in the public and private sectors. Not only do CompTIA Security+ certification programs provide the certifications necessary to stay abreast of changing requirements in the security area, it also gives the DoD IA workforce the professional recognition of its peers within the IA industry.

CompTIA Security+ certification were chosen as one of four certifications to satisfy the requirements of the DoD 8570 Directive. It is one of the vital factors in the selection of CompTIA Security+ by the DoD. It ensures that its workforce involved with insightful and personal data are well-trained and hold the right security certifications.
