Technical recruitment is the service of locating and recruiting technical professionals. Technical recruiting involves the placement of engineers, drafters, programmers, technicians and hard science professionals. While placing jobs on ad boards can generate responses, the small subset of professionals with technical skills and the highly specialized nature of the jobs that they fill can result in thousands of applications in which no one is qualified. What, then, are some traditional routes for technical recruitment? And what are some non-traditional routes for technical recruitment? 1. Find the professional society for that industry or skill set. For example, when looking for mechanical engineers, post positions with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. For an automotive engineering position, contact the local chapters of SAE, the Society for Automotive Engineers. Industrial engineers commonly belong to the Institute of Industrial Engineers, while electrical engineers can belong to the IEEE. Aerospace engineering jobs should be referred to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. These technical professional societies have their own job boards as well as newsletter and magazines to promote the job opening. 2. Contact colleges with strong engineering schools and get the contact information for their engineering alumni section. Engineering alumni groups get frequent requests from members for job leads. Whether these jobs are posted on the engineering alumni website, sent in their newsletter, or simply referred via word of mouth, you’ll get qualified candidates in short order. 3. Locate technical chat rooms for the area of expertise for the position to be filled. Then introduce yourself as a recruiter. Include a link to the job position description for interested parties. Those who are interested can follow the link. Those who are not interested can refer the link to friends in the industry who might be interested. 4. Find technical interest groups heavy in the skill set you need to hire. For example, aerospace engineers are frequently involved in flying clubs and building light aircraft. Space Tweep, a group for space enthusiasts, also attracts many aerospace experts. Many engineers are involved in the SETI@home project and amateur radio. The Sports Car Club of America or SCCA has amateur race car enthusiasts and automotive engineers among its members. One’s hobbies can be a show case for technical talent, and discussion with members can lead to technical recruitment. Locate these groups. Consider paying for an ad in their newsletter or website for the technical position. And unlike questions about their private employment, the involvement in their hobby can provide a showcase for their skills. An automotive engineer who has helped redesign a small car as a race car has an example of their expertise someone who merely contributed to software models cannot match.
