A trampoline is a piece of equipment that can be used for fun, exercise, and professional athletics. It usually consists of springs attached to a metal frame, with a tightly stretched synthetic fabric attached to the springs. The fabric, which is of a strong, somewhat rope-like texture, allows a person to jump on it, bouncing them high in the air. Most of the time, parents buy these items for their children, as they allow for hours of fun outdoor activity and exercise. However, many pediatricians have come out against the home use of trampolines in recent years. They claim that trampolines are too dangerous, and the potential of serious injury is way too high. Additionally, many professional athletes use trampolines, and claim that they were never actually designed for, or intended for, home use. Hospitals see thousands of injuries in the emergency room every year due to these pieces of equipment. Injuries range from minor cuts and bruises to broken bones, and even spinal injuries. Trampoline manufacturers are trying to combat this by offering safety features, such as nets, to prevent children from bouncing off or falling on the ground. However, they have yet to address the fact that many injuries come from the jumping itself, and colliding while jumping – this is more to do with parent supervision. Trampoline-like devices have been in use for hundreds of years, in many different civilizations. They have been used for fun, and they have been used for practical purposes, such as helping to rescue people from burning buildings. Firemen have been able to stretch out bouncy, sheet-like materials to enable people to safely leap from higher stories of buildings. Trampolines have even been used for visual entertainment, such as at the circus. Gymnasts also use the devices, and there is even an Olympic event dedicated to trampoline acrobatics. These athletic competitions were officially added to the Olympics in the year 2000. Athletes can either tumble on their own or practice synchronized tumbling. The routine is quite amazing to witness, and requires extreme athletic skill and ability. Trampolines, as they are today, were developed in the mid nineteen thirties by Larry Griswold and George Nissen, who were athletes with the University of Iowa. At the time the devices were referred to as tumblers. It is amazing to think how far trampolines have come, as they are now used in astronaut and flight training by the United States Navy. Soviet astronauts have also been using the equipment, as it helps with strength, endurance, and a variety of other issues. It’s exciting to think that the same devices that astronauts use to prepare space travel can also be found in backyards across America.
