China can easily be counted as among one of the world's top travel destinations, primarily because of the fact that Beijing became such an important city post the 2008 Olympics. The wide open spaces of Tibet contrast starkly to the crowded streets of Shanghai. An equally impressive, if one can call it that, contrast is the of enjoying beer by the bag at seaside Qingdao, as well as the volcanic dishes of Sìchuan. A trip through the mammoth landscape of China that encompasses every possible geographical diversity is indeed memorable. Tiger Leaping Gorge: Any person taking a hike at the Tiger Leaping Gorge and expecting a regular adventure experience will be in for a big surprise. The gorge measures 16km in length, and is among the deepest in the world. The heighet is 3900m from the Jinsha river to the Haba mountain (in the west) and the Yùlóng Xueshan (in the east). The ideal time to come here is in May or June, when there is plenty of flora and fauna in the hills. The mini trek is one of the highlights of this region, although the maps provided by the local cafés aren't the most accurate. The transportation scenario here is much better in recent times. The latter years of development have taken their toll on the gorge, but the good thing is that after three years of hardwork and planning, there is now a road going through the gorge from Qiáotóu to Walnut Garden, upon which tour buses shuttle every now and then. There is also a dirt track, which is frequented by trekkers Huang Shan: With its iconic range of granite peaks and twisted pines covered in mist almost all parts of the day, Huáng Shan is among the top places to be in China in terms of scenic beauty, which is also the reason why so many poets and painters have been inspired by this destination. In the current times, the hordes of artists or the yesteryears have now been replaced by the hordes of tourists who throng to get an eyeful, but just can't get enough! Shanghai: Among the world's most dynamic and revered cities, it is difficult to classify Shanghai into a particular type of metropolis, simply because it has metamorphosed into new shapes and forms every day. In the earlier times, it was crowded by foreigners and socialites; and today, it has its own home grown lifestyles of the rich and famous. However, unlike many other Chinese cities, Shanghai has shrugged off its past rather rapidly, and is racing towards the future at a tremendous speed. It is more influenced by Hong Kong that Beijing, and European style cityscapes seemingly clash, and then fuse together, with the tree-lined lanes. It is the typical 'East meets West' concept, much to the delight of the tourist.
