Everyone is looking for new ways to exercise. Treadmills and running are boring, weightlifting can hurt, and aerobics can be inconvenient. Many women have found a new, interesting, exciting way to exercise – pole dancing. Once limited to “gentlemen’s clubs” and strip joints, pole dancing has become accepted as a fun way to work out. The pole is also called a “stripper pole” and is typically a long, slender round metal pole or rod, usually hollow and about 2 inches in diameter, secured to the floor and ceiling of the exercise area. Some studios that offer this discipline have several poles mounted in their workout spaces so that many women can use them at the same time in group classes. The poles are typically stainless steel or chrome plated, although some are brass or powder-coated in various colors. A new innovation is the “glow pole” which is made of acrylic or glass and filled with water, glitter and other reflective materials, often with LED lighting systems built in, to create more of a show atmosphere. Each type of pole has a different feel, giving the user a unique grip and allowing for various moves to be made in different styles. The poles are used in exercise programs as a resistance device, using the body itself as a weight. This builds core strength and flexibility, and many users report an improved sense of confidence, balance and agility. There is an element of performance in pole dancing not found in most forms of exercise that adds to the quality of the experience. In addition to studios and other professional facilities offering this tool, pole dancing can also be done in the home. Poles can be purchased or rented with heavy bases that do not require a ceiling attachment, although one is preferred for stability and safety. A new trend is pole dance parties for women. Instead of the more typical activities offered at parties – games, conversation and the like – some party givers provide a pole for their guests to experiment with, along with suitable music and sometimes lighting effects. These are popular for bachelorette, birthday or “girls night out” type parties, and many companies now offer this service, usually providing not only the pole but also a trainer or facilitator to demonstrate the various moves and encourage others to try them. The night usually culminates in a performance by each attendee, doing their best to show off their moves. Pole Secrets offer pole dance instructors and pole dancing classes
