Children's Wear Retailers

Fashion & Cosmetics,Online Shopping
Children's wear is a booming business. The average family spends over $1000 per child yearly on clothing. 20% of all retail sales are children's clothing, leading to a multi-million dollar business. Why are families spending so much? Well, several factors are responsible for the profitable children's clothing business. One is children are always growing out of their clothes; sometimes at a rate of two sizes per year, more if that child is an infant. The second reason is marketing and fashion trends. Children are being targeted by companies to display fashion, just like the adults. There are thousands of stores in which to purchase children's clothing. There are mass merchandisers, like Walmart, KMart, and Target, which offer limited styles and sizes for a discounted price. Department stores have sections of their store which cater to children, such as Sears and J.C. Penney. Sears even offers a program called "Kidvantage" where for every $100 a customer spends on children's clothing, they get 15% off their next purchase. Discount retailers like T.J. Maxx and Marshalls carry some children's clothing, but it is limited also in styles and sizes. New stores have been springing up that are spinoffs of their main stores and cater just to children. Their clothes are hip and trendy, and the price usually reflects it. Stores like Gymboree, GapKids, Babies R Us, The Children's Place, and Osh Kosh B'Gosh, are just a few that offer a more customized, upscale clothing line which is marketed to the wealthier class of people. In suburbs and urban areas, small children's boutiques exist for specialty wear and gifts. The newest trend in purchasing children's clothing is in online business. This is for the busy parents who don’t have the time or energy to go to an actual store; or for the grandparents/relatives who want to send something to the child directly. This eliminates a trip to the post office. Online sites such as Gymboree, Carters, TheRetrobaby, Pumpkin Patch, Zulily, are doing booming business, even in a bad economy. Many customers are turning to websites like, Ebay and Overstock, to obtain great deals on children's clothing, which can be as much as 70% off the original price. Ordering online can also be advantageous depending on the return policy and if free shipping is offered. Because of an uncertain economy and the public leaning toward more eco-friendly ways to help the environment, thrift stores like Goodwill and others are expanding. Name brand items can be found in good condition for a fraction of the price, if buying second hand clothing isn't an issue. Finally, children's clothing consignment stores seem to be everywhere, particularly in the suburbs. Since infants clothing is seldom worn very long before the child grows out of it; buying (and then selling back) to a consignment store is a good idea. They accept mostly name brand clothes with no stains, tears, or fading.
