You start heading to the gym with a plan to get fit, be healthier, and stick to your routine. You go for a few weeks, and then suddenly stop. Why? You lose your motivation. Staying motivated is essential in staying with a gym routine and realizing the health benefits that come with it. So what makes you stay motivated? Determination, planning, and following through can go a long way in keeping you motivated. Here are a few tips for keeping your motivation for going to gym consistent, rewarding, and at a higher level. One of the biggest deterrents in sticking with a gym routine and staying motivated is time constraints. How do you resolve that? Make time! Life is always going to happen, so using excuses like you had a hard day at work, had to grocery shop instead, had a doctor’s appointment that ran longer than expected, or you’re too tired, will always be waiting in the wings for you to pluck out and use as an excuse not to go to the gym. The trick is to pick a time that works well for you any day of the week, and don’t make excuses. Period. Grab your gym gear and head out. Life doesn’t stop so you can workout, but you can stop yourself from losing motivation by consistently going to the gym. The more often you go, the more likely you’ll continue to make the time because you’ll feel better, have more energy, and be healthier. Another good way to boost and maintain your motivation is to find a gym you like and become a regular. You’ll start to get to know other patrons that workout at the same time as you. Working out in a facility you like and feel comfortable in, can go a long way to increase motivation. Likewise, making gym friends creates accountability. If they don’t see you for a while, they’ll ask where you’ve been. Rather than have to start giving excuses and justifications for why you stopped working out, it’s much easier just to go to the gym in the first place. If you like the people you’re sharing the gym with, it will keep you more motivated because you’ll look forward to seeing them. The buddy system can drastically improve your motivation, too. Grab a friend and determine a routine that fits into both of your schedules. Finding a workout buddy helps your motivation in several ways. One, it keeps you accountable to showing up every time because if you don’t, you’re being unfair to your buddy. Likewise, it can help tremendously on those days when you just don’t feel like going. If you have to answer to someone else and they’re going with or without you, chances are you’ll go instead of making justifications for not going. One of the more important things in fueling high motivation is keeping a workout journal and setting goals. So before you start a new routine, take some time and write out the goals you want to set for yourself. These could be weight loss goals, achievement goals, or anything that you can measure with consistent workouts. Once your goals are set, keep a workout diary. That means write down what you do for workouts every time you go. Yes, it sounds tedious. The benefits of journaling, however, are tremendous. You can look back and see your progress, identify areas in which you need to improve, and have a written record when it comes time to re-evaluate your goals and planned routines. What’s the best part of goal-setting and journaling? The rewards! When you reach specific goals you’ve set, splurge on a new gym outfit, go out to dinner, or buy yourself a treat. Applying some or all of these techniques will keep your gym motivation high. The benefits you’ll realize in your every-day life will be amazing. You’ll feel better, have more energy, sleep better, be healthier, and just have an improved overall all sense of well being. What are you waiting for?
