The standards and requirements for designing and building web pages have changed over the years. There are some fundamental differences are between web design and print design. Print design is quite flexible whereas a web designer cannot establish print parameters that will be compatible with all the different browsers that exist on the Internet today. However, there are still some companies who create special print style sheets for their sites. Their goal or objective is to print a clean and clear version that can be fitted on a hard copy sheet. There are also a large number of graphic designers who are still trying to force Web pages into a static nature print design. Unfortunately, in today’s technological environment this is no longer possible. Also, this is one of the hardest transitions for graphic designers to make because they do not want to give up this type of control. They cannot, however, design their sites and accomplish both a web design and a print design. This is especially true for those who will have to learn that the print view will be different in every browser and on different monitor screens. Also, it is no longer feasible to test each site for compatibility with every possible browser, all monitors, along with all the different combinations of operating systems that are currently available to every user. With all of this being said, it is still alright to consider both sides of the coin with some sense of moderation. Although a designer cannot control every aspect of how the web page will appear, it does not mean that he cannot suggest certain aspects of the design. These techniques should be used when it is appropriate. Therefore, it is very important that the designers base their designs on sound design principles. Basically, designers should not expect their designs to remain static. Typically, they can spend hours, days and weeks attempting to create a design where the pixels can line up exactly in Safari, Opera, and Chrome. The best solution for the designer today is to produce a design that will degrade gracefully as well as handling less common situations. The designer must also evaluate the tools that are being used in order to create each design. For example, Photoshop can only create designs that will remain static. The user will only see the image that is displayed. However, the view of the image will be different from browser to browser. The goal or objective now is to make the pages look good and as close to these design specifications as possible on a wide range of browsers.
