Blogs are more than a simple website designed by amateurs. They have grown into something that is both useful to society and beneficial to the writers. Without blogs the public would still be in the dark about many issues bubbling underneath your large media conglomerates. Blogs are a new voice in society that pays intellectuals for their work. Social Impact of Blogs: Blogs are part of the social media network. Similar such sites might be YouTube, Associated Content, MySpace, and rating sites like Technorati. These sites constitute a separate medium for professional and amateur authors to voice their opinion and potentially make money. Even though many blog writers do contribute a significant amount to society in terms of their knowledge and opinions the far majority of blogs are either abandoned, useless or not worth their time being read. These types of blogs generally exist in the world of personal experiences unrelated to anyone who does not know them. Those blogs that do contribute to society do so by providing valuable insight and perspective on world and national events. For example, bloggers who reported on happenings inside Iraq as the war was going on or who discuss a topic of national importance will likely contribute to raising issues in society. A simple process of how this works is that people raise the issue through blogs and websites. Once there is enough buzz about the issue the large news companies like CNN begin to cover the story. If the large companies are covering the topic, the blogs are reporting on it; eventually the government will start to listen. Economics of Blogs: Blogging has a whole economic world attached to it. There are millions of millions of dollars running through highly visited blogs. Companies advertise on these blogs in order to increase exposure of their sites. Some of the most popular blogs can make 60K per month. It will be possible in the near future to see a single person making millions off of their writings utilizing corporate money. As online advertising revenue increase so does the money that is paid out to bloggers. Blogging is no longer a hobby for amateur writers; it is an extension of their work. At times it is their sole source of income. Since most blogs are free, or can be hosted for minimum cost, this makes blogging a great opportunity for people to make money. Blogging also encourages younger writers to have a chance to make money from their work. The opportunities are still lacking in many fields but as they become more technologically savvy they begin to know which sites work for them and which sites do not. The key for these writers is knowing which sites pay and which ones don’t. Murad Ali, a two-time published author, writes articles and offers advertisement space for businesses.
