Automobiles for Carrying Heavy Goods Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) and Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) are different names of the same automobile. These are nothing but motor vehicles (like Lorries or Trucks) for carrying large quantities of goods. These vehicles should have a gross combination mass (GCM) of more than 3,500 kilograms (or 7,716 lb). HGVs can again be sub-categorised into two groups: 1. N2 - Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) up to a maximum allowed mass (MAM) of 12,000 kilograms (or 26,455 lb) 2. N3 – All Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) other than the ones coming under N2 category come under N3 category HGV Driver 1st class trucking is a premier - truck driver training - centre in UK. One of the most reputed - truck driver training - institute in UK. In UK, there has been an acute shortage of qualified HGV drivers. That’s why there has always been an excess demand or them in the market, leading to a rise in their wages. A driver of Large or Heavy Goods Vehicle can earn more than £30,000 in a single year, which means that the driver can earn more than £550 in a single week. There are various advantages of becoming HGV drivers: 1. With bouncing back of the UK economy after recession, there has been a tremendous surge in the demand for HGV drivers. However, the total number of such drivers is quite low in comparison to the demand. At the same time, training period required to become a HGV driver is only five days. So, this is the right time to get trained, pass the test and then hit the road with a lucrative job. 2. It is not a 9 to 5 office job. If you hate a boring office life and want something interesting then HGV truck driving is surely a job for you. 3. This profession gives you enough flexibility to choose your working hours. 4. You can become your own boss. 5. Lucrative profession because a qualified HGV driver can earn more than £30,000 per annum. HGV Driver License There are basically four types of licenses for HGV driving and they are: (i) Category C1 A person having HGV license of this category can drive a heavy automobile having MAM between 3,500 and 7,500 kilograms (i.e. 7,716 and 16,535 lb). If a person is 18 years of age then he can obtain this license. (ii) Category C1+E A person having HGV license of this category can drive a heavy automobile having MAM between 3,500 and 7,500 kilograms (i.e. 7,716 and 16,535 lb) along with a trailer having MAM of 750 kilograms (1,653 lb). Here, it needs special mention that the MAM of the vehicle and trailer should not exceed 12,000 kilograms (i.e. 26,455 lb). (iii) Category C A person having HGV license of this category can drive a heavy automobile having maximum authorised mass (MAM) of more than 3,500 kilograms (i.e. more than 7,716) along with a trailer having MAM of 750 kilograms (1,653 lb). (iv) Category C+E License of this category enables HGV drivers to drive Class 1 trucks. You will be able to drive articulated trucks up to a maximum of 4,400 kilograms. The minimum age of the driver should be 21 and the earning can surpass £600 per week. Professional HGV Automobile Driver’s Acumen A professional HGV driver needs the following skills, knowledge and aptitude: 1. Driving skills should be perfect and the driver should be able to stretch limits during demanding times. 2. The driver should have complete knowledge of all the regulations and should also be able to apply those in his work. 3. The driver should be conversant with the traffic signs, road markings, Highway code and restriction regarding HGVs.
