Finding someone you can trust with your eye care may not be as simple as it first sounds. There are thousands of optometrists and ophthalmologists to choose from, and many don’t know the difference between the two. Friends and family can often suggests good specialists to visit, but is their situation the same as yours? And if it is, is their recommendation a qualified professional or just a friendly neighbour down the street? In an attempt to make the process easier on your eyes, here are a few definitions and tips to be aware of at the beginning of your search. Opto-what? There are two main groups of people who can help you with your vision problems. The first are optometrists or opticians. Optometrists or optician should be your first stop if you are having vision trouble. If you notice blurriness, farsightedness, or eye strain you should find an optometrist who can perform a routine eye test. They are qualified to diagnose and prescribe corrective measures for many normal eye problems, such as astigmatism, and set you up with a pair of glasses. They cannot, however, perform surgery and often are not specialized enough to help with more advanced diseases. That is where a referral to an ophthalmologist comes in. An ophthalmologist is a doctor who has specialised in eye care. They often work in hospitals alongside other fully qualified medical specialists. They can perform surgery, help cure disease, and are a great first option for anyone who has experienced any kind of eye trauma or accident. They have spent a much longer time in medical school than optometrists or opticians, but can often be unnecessary if all you need are a pair of contact lenses. What to look for When searching for either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, first and foremost find someone who is qualified. They should have the required certifications in their office to prove their training to you. Look into specialities within the vision field and ask plenty of questions. Experience should come next. Often an optometrist, or especially an ophthalmologist, is incredibly qualified from an academic standpoint but has very little real-world experience in the field. Experience does not necessarily guarantee a better professional, but it is a good indication that the person has seen a case like yours before and has discovered first-hand what works and what doesn’t. Finally, find someone with whom you feel comfortable. Often this won’t matter too much in the case of an optometrist as you will only see them once every few years for an eye test. But in some situations you will want to know your eye care specialist inside and out. This is especially true with an ophthalmologist as they will be operating on you and working very closely with you during the future. It is important to find someone you can share problems with and trust that they have your best interests at heart. Again, ask plenty of questions and try to get a feel for the person that will be working with you. While there are other specialists out there who could possibly help with your vision problems, these are the two main groups of people you are likely to run into. Make sure you find someone who is qualified with your specific problem and you feel comfortable returning to in case of future problems. Get a feel for the uniqueness of your problem before beginning your search so that you know the proper specialist to approach first and the right questions to ask.
