Furnishing a Home Office

Interior Design,Business
More people are now fortunate enough to be able to work from home, and need a well-appointed home office. One entire room should be set aside for this purpose. The first thing that needs to be done is properly furnishing the home office so that it is conducive to spending long hours there, with maximum ability to concentrate. The desk is the focal point of any home office. One excellent choice is home-assembly furniture available at most office supply stores. There should be a center space large enough to accommodate the computer monitor, computer speakers, a mouse and mouse pad, calculator and general items that are used often, such as a pencil holder, stapler, scotch tape dispenser, telephone and other items you use most often. The best place for the keyboard is a pull-out drawer - that allows the desk space to be used for files and work papers, and the drawer can be closed when the keyboard is not in use. There are desk modules available with several shelves on each side, as well as a large center shelf. The center shelf is ideal for books and manuals, and the side shelves easily accommodate ledger books and binders. Good lighting to avoid eye strain is essential! It is a good idea to make space for a desk lamp. The softer light is easier on the eyes than an overhead light for long periods of work. Most home offices need a printer/scanner/fax machine. This should be located on a desk or table immediately adjacent to the desk so that it can be accessed without having to get up to use it. The home office should also contain a low cabinet with sliding doors for the storage of paper, printer ink, extra file folders and computer and screen cleaning supplies. The top of this cabinet can be used for larger desk items, such as a paper cutter and hole-puncher. The computer CPU should fit easily under the desk, but should be placed to the side for easy access. Some office furniture has a closed area for placement of the CPU, but sometimes these cause problems by allowing the CPU to become overheated. One of the most important items in the home office is the chair. This is where the home worker spends most of his or her day, and it is essential that it be comfortable. Whether the chair is leather or fabric, the seat should be soft enough so that it does not cause discomfort over a long period. The height should be able to be adjusted for maximum eye comfort when using the computer. When a home office is allowed to get messy and disorganized, it becomes unpleasant to work there. File cabinets should be used to store folders and files, which should be put away at the end of each work day. A shredder and large waste paper basket should be used and emptied regularly. If the home office is also to be used for meeting with clients, there should be a separate seating area so that the home worker is not sitting at his desk during the meeting. Several chairs and a small table on the opposite side of the room would be an ideal arrangement. Since long periods of time are apt to be spent in the home office, there are several ways to make the day more enjoyable. A desk positioned near a window allows a welcome break from staring at a computer monitor. The walls should be painted in an agreeable color, and putting up pictures gives the room a homey and comfortable look.
