Learning how to drive is one of the most exciting, rewarding, yet dangerous rites of passage for Americans. After spending all of childhood relying on parents and adults for transportation, a new driver has access to the roads and freedom of movement. However, that freedom also comes at a price, as driving a car can be very dangerous. The desire to learn to drive is obvious. It is usually done by most in their late teens, a phase of life in which the individual naturally wants to establish as much personal freedom and space for themselves as possible. Having a license can mean no longer being stuck at home under their parent's immediate authority. Instead, they can spend time with friends, perhaps get a job to earn disposable income and have the freedom to use that income. While having a license is a form of freedom, it is also a form of responsibility. Not only must a new driver successfully pass their local class and tests to be licensed, many states require car insurance as well. A driver must also learn to take care of their vehicle, as well as their personal discipline needed to be a safe successful driver. This discipline includes not driving while intoxicated or under the influence of any substance. It also includes seat belt usage. When on the road, every driver expects other drivers to obey road signs and traffic signals, stay in their lanes unless there is an opening and use their signals before coming over. Pedestrians also rely on drivers to be aware of where they may be crossing. Ideally, a driver would also seek to protect their vehicle with proper maintenance and regular checks of vital parts and fluid levels. Even accidents that do not produce injury can result in higher insurance premiums. So, when someone is driving, they should not only seek to protect people, but also property - and as a result their wallet and income. Learning how to drive is something that has gotten increasingly complex in recent history. The number of controls in cars has grown. There is now GPS in many cars that can help the driver navigate to unknown locations. However, there is also widespread use of mobile phones which can provide a serious distraction for any drivers, but especially new ones. Even if not engaged in conversation, internet usage and text messaging can distract from driving. Learning to drive can be complicated. However, if learned with focus, respect and proper concentration, getting a license and a car can mean freedom of movement and personal independence.
