There are hardwood mats and then there are hardwood mats. The differences in quality among hardwood mats can come from a lot of different places. The quality of timber is one such differentiating factor. Another is the quality of the manufacturing process. This entails the harvesting process, the milling process, the treatment process and the assembly process. This month we’re going to look at a couple of these factors a little more in depth and see what we can learn about the hardwood mat making process. You may not have realized it, but there are many different grades of lumber out there, which means a lot of different grades of hardwood mat. These differences come from a lot of places. For example, an older tree will often produce a stronger wood than a younger tree. The climate the tree was grown in also makes a significant difference in how strong its lumber will be. All of these differences are taken into consideration when selecting lumber to build a hardwood mat. When only the strongest will do, high quality lumber can ensure the strength and reliability of the product. Without a reliable foundation, jobs in difficult conditions can become a whole lot more serious and difficult. The timber mats and hardwood mats that are made with superior products will prove themselves out when it comes to longevity and durability when they are actually put into action on the front lines of the jobsite. Lumber grading systems help to determine what wood is suitable for what applications. You wouldn’t go into a pipeline laying operation without knowing what your trenching machine is capable of. So too, you shouldn’t go into the field without knowing what your hardwood mats and crane mats are capable of. So, if you take one thing away from today’s post, let it be that quality matters, no matter what the job.
