Your application is considered to be the most important factor while choosing the microscope. What you really want to see and what you really want to do with the images will help in determining the kinds of microscopes. There are mainly 2 types of microscopes: Stereo Microscope and the Compound Microscope. Compound microscope is considered to be the most common microscope. This microscope is the one which most of the people visualize when they think about the microscopes. Monocular microscope is one which has got a single eyepiece and the binocular microscope is one which has got the 2 eyepieces. And if in case the Microscope has got the additional camera tube then it is known as trinocular microscope. The compound microscope has got number of objectives. These objectives are mounted on the rotatable nosepiece and are of varying magnification. The lens is placed closest to the object which has to be viewed. The best thing about these microscopes is that they are used to view the tiny and small objects like the bacterium or the cells. The light source is used beneath the stage in order to make the slide illuminated. The magnification power of the compound microscope lies in the range of 40X to 1000X. In general terms, the magnification of the compound microscope can be calculated by multiplying the power of the objective lens by the power of the eyepiece. The other common microscope is called the Stereo Microscope which is also called as the dissecting microscope. In this microscope, 2 eyepieces and the 2 paired objectives are used. The two main models which are available in the stereo microscopes are the one with two magnification settings and the other is the one which has got the full zooming capability. These stereo microscopes are mainly used by the biologists for performing the dissections or by the technicians in order to repair or build the circuit boards or they are used by the paleontologists in order to examine and clean the fossils. These microscopes are used by those who have got their hands on the small objects.
