The stereotypical wedding is held in the spring, when the sun is shining, the birds chirping and the bride can appear in all her bare-armed glory along with her army of attendants. But more and more brides are considering fall and winter weddings. There are a number of very good reasons for this. First, there is a lower demand for the nuts and bolts components of weddings – the churches, reception halls, caterers and bands tend to be a bit less busy during the fall and winter, and are thus easier to reserve on the date that the bride wants. Secondly, there is a growing desire for less traditional wedding venues, including parks and other outdoor locations that are strikingly beautiful in the autumn. Also, many brides are moving away from the standard wedding arrangements, and prefer to use the broader range of colors and fashions available for autumn/winter weddings. As in springtime weddings, a successful wedding in the cooler months requires careful planning. It could be worth the money to hire a professional wedding planner to manage the details, or at least give the bride a good roadmap to follow. The weather conditions can be radically different in the fall and winter, and you must be prepared to offer shelter to your guests in case of a sudden fall shower or winter flurry. The design and material of the bride’s and bridesmaid’s dresses will be different, as well – longer sleeves will prevail, as well as longer skirts and more conservative styling. Even the choice of food served at the reception will likely be different, with more hearty, substantial fare instead of springtime salads. But if you manage all the details correctly, and get a bit of luck with the weather, a fall or winter wedding can be a wonderful experience, one that creates memories that last a lifetime. Picture a crisp fall day, perhaps near a stream or lake, with an explosion of fall colors in the trees. A carriage waits outside the church to take the newly-married couple to the reception. Or a cold, clear winter day with the sun shining over a blanket of freshly-fallen snow. Maybe the bride and groom arrive at the church in a horse-drawn sleigh, or even by snowmobile. The reception dinner features a hearty stew, and the happy couple talks with their guests about their plans for a skiing honeymoon. So as in so many other things in today’s society, weddings have undergone a refreshing re-evaluation and can now be held any time of year.
