Both these huge companies were recently blacklisted by Google, because they tried to use shady SEO practices to increase their search rankings.

Last month, Google discovered that JCPenney was taking advantage of its link-weighted algorithm, a system that determines sites are more "search worthy" the more inbound links it has. Instead of utilizing an SEO web site design process, JCPenney was paying thousands of web domains across the net to link in to their site, upping their search rankings for huge terms like "black dress" and "bedding."

When Google found out, JCPenney was penalized by having its rankings buried.

Less than a month later, Overstock.com was now involved in a similar scandal. Instead of using proper SEO web site design to up their search rankings, Overstock has been participation in some unsavory practices. The company has allegedly been paying college students to link to their web site and products on their school pages, taking advantage of the weight Google gives to .edu sites.

As its punishment, Google buried Overstock.com in the search rankings, as well. If these companies had just opted for a SEO web site design process, instead of using SEO as an add-on to an already existing site, their blacklisting could have been prevented.

SEO web site design is a proven method of search engine optimization. It’s a process. Companies should look to incorporate SEO keywords and phrases from the bottom up on their web site: in the infrastructure, in the Meta tags, in the site copy and content, and even in the graphics. SEO is just plain not as effective if it’s tacked on to a site that’s not fully optimized to support its efforts.
