There are many varieties of do it yourself greenhouses which can be designed for every season of the year. A Lean to greenhouse is one of many designs. Greenhouses are not just used for special plants. The framed structure or building can be used for any variety of herb, fruit, vegetable or flower vegetation and more. Imagine how you will feel when you build your do it yourself lean to greenhouse and see your beautiful plants nurtured into good health. It is also a wonderful sight to see these plants continuing to produce their fruits or flowers after being transferred into a larger outdoor garden. Greenhouse construction can be built with wood, steel, aluminum, brick, concrete, or plastic materials. The permanence of the main building will determine if the roof and sides will be covered with glass, polycarbonate, shade cloth, or polyethylene film. The commercial growers in our area use polyethylene film or polycarbonate. Without doubt the weather and expenses have much to do with film selection. Polyethylene film is available for different life times. Glass seems to be used rarely. The residential neighborhoods use polyethylene film, shade cloth or polycarbonate depending on the economics of the home owner. I am under the impression that if glass is used tinting must be added. Lean to construction: • The lean to greenhouse is made with square frames covered with greenhouse film. • Tall exterior walls are constructed to accommodate the height of an adult. • The lean to roof is designed with a slanting roof. • The floor can be of grass, earth, a drop cloth, pebbles, concrete, or cement blocks. • A door is optional. • Shelves are installed to contain pots of plants. Most often, the lean to will be narrow. Three feet wide appears to be a common width. It will not hold garden tools. Lean to benefits: • Designed to keep small plants and seedlings safe from insects • Maintain controlled humidity allowing a young plant or seed to establish itself • Maintain proper soil conditions • Easier propagation Regardless of size, the function of the greenhouse design is to: • Be a temporary home for plants • A nursery for seedlings and new sprouts • A place where a plant can produce flowers or fruits • A safe environment for a plant to be nursed back to health • An environment with controlled temperature and air circulation • Protection from insects and critters • If you are a beginner in greenhouse gardening, or uncertain; it would be worth your while to start out with a small lean to.
