When securing a shop premises, it can sometimes come down to a choice between manned security and electronic wizardly. Manned security is when there is a physical presence of a human being at the premises, for example detecting shoplifters or manning a desk to ensure goods are secure at all times. Electronics for security can be in the form of alarm systems, CCTV or electronic tags. These can be used to detect unwanted intrusions and to detect shoplifting that in a busy environment. Both manned security and electronic security can act as a theft deterrent, if this is the desired effect. People are now used to security measures in shops, and do not readily consider them to be especially intrusive – but it is sometimes possible that you want to keep your security measure more low-key. A security guard following a browser’s every move around a shop can be unnerving and mildly insulting. CCTV and alarm systems can sometimes be a better option for some businesses as long as they are closely monitored. Customers barely notice them, but thieves do. This is not to say that manned security is always a bad thing, in fact an excellent security guard can perform his duties as well as be a customer service representative for the business. Many times, the security guard can be the first and only employee that a browsing customer will be in contact with, so choosing security personnel that can perform their job professionally but not get in the way of the customer’s purchasing experience. There is always a trade-off between cost and security. It is possible to have the most advanced state of the art equipment, and an army of security personnel, but the cost of employing such a system will probably outweigh the potential loss that comes with theft. Businesses should look for the security system that greatly reduces the chance of theft without breaking the bank. You should also try and consider a system that will double as a deterrent and detection system when the shop is closed. Depending on the business, this could be manned guards 24-7, so there is always someone on the premises to protect it. CCTV and alarm systems are more common, and a half-way house would be CCTV systems which are monitored by a remote team. These remote teams can view hundreds of CCTV systems, and although there is not someone physically on the premises there is always someone checking on the feeds periodically.
