Pregnancy is a time when hunger pangs and cravings for food are at its maximum but the important thing is that it is also the time that you must eat the right foods to get proper nutrition for you as well as the growing baby.

Before telling you what are the right foods to eat during this time, let me share with you what is best to avoid during this time. Seafood is healthy and nutritious but steer clear from the undercooked or raw ones like clams and oysters. Refrain from indulging in sushi and any other dish which contains raw seafood or meat. It is also best to stay away from fish which have high levels of mercury like swordfish, shark and king mackerel. You can have canned tuna or any other canned seafood but have it only occasionally and also make sure that you have looked at the dates on the tin.

Among the poultry, it is best to avoid any uncooked meat products like hotdogs, salami, sausages and pepperoni unless you have cooked it till steaming hot or above 160 degrees. The same goes for eggs too; stay away from desserts, sauces or dressings which use raw or undercooked eggs. When you cook fish, make sure that the flesh has turned opaque or cook it at 145 degrees. Chicken must be cooked to 165 degrees, lamb and beef to 145 degrees and pork at 160 degrees. Make sure that you eat well cooked omelets and not runny ones which will be undercooked. It is also best to go easy on canned foods, chips, soft drinks and chocolates during the pregnancy period.

Unpasteurized milk is also a complete no during this time. Instead eat lots of vegetables and fruits during pregnancy for getting a complete nutrition. You can take veggies in the form of soups, salads or you could include these in sandwiches. There is no harm in having fast food items like pizzas and burgers; make sure that you take whole wheat pizza with lots of vegetable toppings. Prepare healthy burgers by cooking the meat patty well and then piling it with healthy vegetables like lettuce, tomato and onion. Instead of French fries, have roasted potatoes which are tasty and are low on fat.

It is best to include a slice of fruit every day for breakfast during pregnancy and snack on fruit smoothies whenever you can. You can either use a single fruit or prepare smoothies using two or three fruits. Have a high fiber diet like oats for breakfast and also drink lots of milk to meet the calcium demands. If you are a vegetarian, make sure that you get enough protein in the form of milk, soya chunks or soya milk, tofu, cheese, yoghurt and beans. Include more dark green leafy vegetables, walnuts and flax seeds for the omega-3 fatty acids.

Pregnancy is the time when you must stay fit and healthy not just for you but also for your growing baby. The right foods will ensure that you get the right nutrition which will make pregnancy an enjoyable experience for you.
