Yoga is an ancient practice that has its origins in India and is closely related to the Hindu and Buddhist philosophies. This is not just a form of exercise but a philosophy which has to be adapted at all levels of your life to gain physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

There are numerous health benefits and advantages of practicing this ancient form regularly. Let us see how yoga can transform not only our physical health but also our psychological and spiritual health.

Increased flexibility of the body is one of the most important virtues of this exercise form. Yoga asanas and postures can make your body more flexible by exercising joints, tendons and ligaments that are often left out in other forms of exercise. It also helps to keep the body more supple by lubricating the joints, ligaments and tendons which is extremely necessary in people with advancing age. Regular practice of yoga makes your bones less brittle and eases joint pains which are the main woe of senior adults.

You will find it surprising that after a few sessions of the basic asanas and postures, the rigidity in many of the body parts have vanished and instead you feel supple and light. Many trainees say that they feel a sense of lightness after practicing yoga; this is because the postures are so designed to make even the most rigid area of your body flexible and bring about a sense of harmony and balance.

Yoga is an excellent massage therapist; the various asanas and poses can not just massage your external body but also all your internal organs. A fine example of this is the prostate gland which gets stimulated in yogic asanas and is simply not possible in any other exercise form or massage therapy. This is especially useful for those who suffer from prostate disorders including cancer. One of the far reaching benefits of yoga is that it helps you to be more aware of your body and a regular practitioner can in fact sense an impending disease or disorder which is advantageous for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

The asanas and postures of yoga is also extremely effective for complete detoxification of the body; blood flow and circulation is improved which helps in the timely removal of toxins from the body. This helps to delay ageing process and also provides you with increased energy levels which can boost your health as well as give you a renewed zest for life. Yoga is also extremely helpful for those who want to tackle obesity and lose weight in a healthy manner. The postures and poses will help to remove excess flab and fat and replace it instead with toned muscles.

These are just the physical benefits of this great exercise form; yoga can be of enormous help in attaining a sense of inner calm and peace. The balance and harmony this practice can provide you helps you achieve good health and well being not just of the body but of the mind and soul.
