Causes and Treatment for Infertility in Men or Women

Health
No one knows for certain how many couples have difficulty conceiving, since some will decide not to seek medical treatment. However, it is now becoming increasingly common for couples to seek medical assistance to have a baby. In most cases there will be one or more causes that a specialist can pinpoint and, possibly, treat.

Contrary to popular belief, infertility is not just a woman's problem. In fact, it strikes men and women almost equally. About 32 per cent of cases can be attributed to men, another 32 per cent to women, and 17 per cent to a combination of factors affecting both partners. This leaves about 19 per cent of couples where the cause of infertility remains unexplained.

Infertility's most common causes, as well as typical treatments, are outlined below. The first three problem areas (ovulation and egg quality, blocked fallopian tubes and male-factor problems) account for about 90 per cent of all cases where a cause has been identified. The links below will guide you to more information on each topic, but always talk to your GP for specific guidance on your individual situation.

The Problem lies Deep Within

The most common causes of infertility in women stem from problems with the reproductive organs. In order for a woman to get pregnant naturally, she must ovulate, that is release an egg. There are numerous conditions that can lead to abnormalities in ovulation, and when the egg is not released, it is impossible to get pregnant. There are also other causes of infertility in women, like problems with the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes that can lead to infertility. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is one of the most common causes of female infertility, and it is a condition that is characterized by multiple cysts in the ovaries and hormonal imbalances or irregularities. Other causes of infertility in women can include tubal scarring, blocked tubes, or hormonal imbalance. Thyroid irregularities or adrenal gland problems can also lead to infertility. When left untreated, there are also various types of sexually transmitted diseases that can eventually lead to infertility in women.

Causes of Infertility: Decreased body weight: Women need to have a balanced meal and should have enough body weight if they will be able to have a baby. It is considered unsafe during pregnancy if the weight of the pregnant woman is less than the recommended. This is not the only factor to be considered, women who are very underweight have been found to be having a lesser chance of getting pregnant than women who are not very lean. Many adolescents go to extreme lengths to maintain their weight and this may cause infertility.

Obesity: Just like weightlessness, obesity can also cause problems of infertility in women. Women who are minimally overweight may not encounter any problems, but women who are grossly obese and overweight can be infertile.

Smoking and alcoholism: Smoking and alcoholism have also been associated with infertility. These are lifestyle changes that depend on the society a person lives in. In affluent families today where changes are happening in the culture, smoking and alcoholism in women are more common. This has had a major impact on the ability of women to become pregnant and have children. This is because of the fact that these habits along with substance abuse can cause a person to become impotent. These lifestyle changes have been the cause of infertility in many women around the world.

Sexually transmitted diseases: With increasing pre marital sex and also affairs within a marriage, there is a higher risk of women being affected by sexually transmitted diseases. This is seen in the high number of HIV victims all over the world. Infidelity and infertility can have a link because of the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases.

Late marriage: Late marriages are also very common in the society. Previously marriage used to be a tradition that was important than anything else. Now, for women, career and studies have become more important. This has led to late marriages. When women are past their prime, the fertility decreases. So late marriages have been an increasing reason for women being infertile.

Lack of exercise: Lack of exercises is another important and major cause of infertility. A person has to have adequate exercises to be physically fit. Only when a person is physically fit will the person be able to have normal ability to function. Women are increasingly participating in desk jobs around the world, leading to a sedentary lifestyle. This has had an impact on their physical fitness leading to infertility.

Infertility Treatment

Your doctor will meet with you and your partner after the evaluation is completed and outline a treatment plan according to the diagnosis, duration of infertility, and the woman's age. If pregnancy has not been accomplished within a reasonable time, you and your doctor may consider further evaluation or a different treatment plan. Your doctor should be able to counsel you in forming realistic expectations for pregnancy.

Most infertility can be treated with conventional therapies, such as drug treatment (fertility drugs) to promote ovulation or surgery to repair problems with reproductive organs.

For men, the most common cause of infertility in the couple is with the sperm.Either no sperm cells are produced or few are produced.Sperm can be deformed or die before they reach the egg.

For women, the most common cause of infertility factor is an ovulation disorder. Other causes of female infertility include blocked fallopian tubes, which can occur when a woman has had pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis (a sometimes painful condition causing adhesions and cysts). Congenital anomalies involving the structure of the uterusor uterine fibroids may cause repeated miscarriages.
