There have been some arguments about the relevance of niche directories and how better they are when compared to general directories. Some people even think that the general directories do not have much to offer these days and are gradually being phased out. Well, only time will tell if directory submissions will still be relevant in SEO. For now however, should you go “nichey” or general in your directory submissions? Are niche directories better than general directories? 1.Depends on Your Niche Well the truth is that it really depends on what your needs are. Getting in broad directories like Dmoz can be quite difficult. Besides, a large majority of the directories have serious issues with their content and quality standards. So, while you may submit to broad category directories, if you have the opportunity to submit to the niche directories and can find high quality ones you need to submit to them because they could deliver more high quality one way links. 2.Niche Directories Generate More Targeted Visitors Most times, people surfing through the niche directory listings are often familiar with the niches and can often visit a website because they are genuinely interested in the website. Niche directories tend to serve as a really good source of high quality and targeted traffic when they are popular and are well ranked on the search engines. 3.Links are More Relevant Links coming from niche directories are often contextually relevant from the search engine’s point of view. For them, getting listed in a high profile and authority website is a sign hat your website is relevant in the scheme of things. 4.General Directories Could be Spammy Most free general directories seem to be spammy in nature. Leaving your links in these bad neighborhoods can seriously affect your link quality. With the exception of a few directories like Yahoo Directory, JoeAnt and Dmoz, a large number of these general directories offer little or no benefits link wise, traffic wise or value wise. If you can find niche directories, you should seriously link to them even before linking to the general ones. One thing you should be wary of however is the quality and standard of the niche directory. If it doesn't seem like a well maintained directory, your best bet would be to go look elsewhere.
