When new information on Topamax from the North American Antiepileptic Drug (AED) Pregnancy Registrar which showed an increased in the risk of oral clefts in infants who were exposed during the trimester of pregnancy when Topamax was consumed by pregnant women, the FDA immediately issued Topamax warnings on the drug which was being used for treating people who suffered from migraine headaches. It has become very important for women who are pregnant or child bearing age and consuming Topamax should consult their physicians and take their advise. FDA has stated that women who have been taking Topamax during their pregnancy period are likely to give birth to children with cleft lip and cleft palate. So they have cautioned would be mothers to be careful while taking any type of medications and to be safe from Topamax birth defects. FDR has classified Topamax as Pregnancy Category D because of its findings as a dangerous medication which can maim fetuses. Manufacturers after coming to know all about the major Topamax warning or it’s any other version have not pulled Topamax out. There are quite a lot of consideration manufacturers have to do regarding the use of Topamax which have gone against them for cleft lips and cleft palates but on the other hand it is very effective against epileptic and migraine. The North American Antiepileptic Drugs pregnancy Registrar has clearly stated that Topamax birth defects were occurring in about 1-4% of children whose mothers were on topirmate only and not with any other epileptic medication in their prescription. While infants whose mothers were on antiepileptic drugs only are showing oral clefts in 38% to 55% of all births. Here the difference between those who were consuming Topirmate against mothers who gave birth while under a combination of medication for epilepsy shows that these drugs should require careful monitoring and caution. Topamax was being originally prescribed to be used by patients who have epilepsy seizures and if the patient fail to take this medication they then they may have some serious side effects. Topamax warning now indicates that women of child bearing age and suffering from epilepsy should go for some alternate medication therapy and should consult their physician and have an heart to heart talk about the merits and demerits of Topamax. If it is really proved that due to Topamax most of the mothers have delivered birth defect children it will be a big jolt for these companies who produce these drugs. Then they will be pulled up in court for not warning the users the potential danger of consuming these drugs. Till date no legal action has been taken against these companies but a public awareness against these drugs are building up. Now because of the Topamax birth defects happening, the FDA has urged thee companies to mention the ingredients involved in producing these drugs on their label with a warning to consumers on the risk it has. So that those who are consuming Topamax will know exactly that the product is dangerous for pregnant women.
