This week, we are going to look at a major upcoming transmission line project to get some of the details about the kind of projects that hardwood mats and crane mats help make a success. Slated to run from south central Wyoming, through northwestern Colorado and central Utah, ending up near Las Vegas, Nevada, the TransWest Express Transmission Project will serve as a lifeline bringing cleaner energy to the Southwest. This project is an extra-high-voltage direct-current electric transmission system. Because of the kind of transmission line it is, renewable energy will be efficiently and quickly sent “downstream.” Somewhere in the region of 20,000 GWh/yr of sustainable electric power generated in Wyoming will be sent through the line and arrive on the other side. This will help meet the needs of growing energy demand while complying with increasingly tight regulations on energy and the use of renewable resources. Hardwood mats and crane mats of every kind are an invaluable resource in the construction of such a massive transmission line. This project transects a lot of different types of terrain, all of which is important to protect. The project will make use of many existing service access roads and other previously established corridors to minimize the environmental impact of the project. By employing crane mats and laminated mats, the jobsites are being protected even further. The project will meet North American Electric Reliability Corporation Reliability Standards and Western Electricity Coordinating Council planning criteria and line separation requirements. This will ensure sustainable transmission for the future and a speedy deployment of the transmission line itself. Expected to be completed by 2015, this project, with the help of hardwood mats, crane mats, and construction mats will be keeping the southwest on track for energy efficiency in the years to come.
