If you're looking for a holiday in the sun where you get to experience a city break with some beautiful scenery rolled into one, why not consider venturing to Brisbane? The capital of Queensland in Australia, Brisbane is an ideal location for those wanting to relax in a laidback location where it's possible to enjoy the best of both the city and the countryside. One of Australia's fastest growing locations, Brisbane is great for sightseeing, boasting numerous natural, historical and cultural attractions. So if getting to know your holiday destination is an important part of your break, take a look at flights to Brisbane and you won't be disappointed. The city's warm climate makes it ideal for getting out and about, so it's not surprising that many of Brisbane's attractions can be found outdoors. Adventure sports, beaches, al fresco dining and scenic walks are all among the popular pastimes to be found here. Additionally, there are some towering mountains to climb, so visit the most well-known - Mount Cooth-tha - for some spectacular views over the city by either day or night. Nature fans might like to call in at the Botanic Gardens, where you'll find 52 hectares of Australian flora, streams, lakes and ponds, or why not call in at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary? The centre was the first of its kind in the world and it's here you can see 40 of the marsupials at play. For a fun excursion, another highlight when staying in Brisbane is the river cruises. Because of the city's position on the River Brisbane, and the numerous creeks that criss-cross through the metropolis, there are public transport ferries that can take you all over the region if you need to get around. Additionally, there are sightseeing river cruises ideal for tourists who haven't yet found their bearings and would like to tour the city before venturing out and about on their own. Board one of the vessels and you can take a scenic ride through the city's urban landscape and down the river under numerous bridges. As well as short rides around the city, there are river cruises that can take you to specific points of interest. One such location is Moreton Bay and its islands. The area is a national park and is a great place for spotting nature. Enjoy some whale-watching or, if you've energy to burn, try your hand at some adventure sports such as surfing, sailing, quad biking or sand tobogganing. If you'd rather take it easy, visit the sandy islands and relax in the sun, or have a go at a spot of fishing. Another great destination to visit for a river cruise is the glittering Gold Coast. During your journey you'll pass through the Broadwater and take in the sight of the Sovereign Islands as well as the Jumpinpin Channel. There are all kinds of wildlife to spot here, so keep your eyes peeled for black swans, dugongs, turtles and dolphins. You'll pass through Moreton Bay and alongside the island of Coochiemudlo - which translates to Red Rock. So-called because the cliff face on the isle is red in colour due to its rich iron content. If you'd like to find out more about Brisbane's history, a great place to visit is St Helena island. This is one of the region's most historical isles and constitutes Brisbane's first heritage national park. It is here you'll find what's left of a penal settlement that existed on the island from 1867 to 1932 and housed the city's most hardened criminals. Unlike modern prisons, the facility made inmates build the structure themselves from local beach rock stone and grow crops such as olives, vegetables and sugar cane. Prisoners also made products such as boots and uniforms, as well as other items that were shipped back to the mainland, making the settlement fairly self-sufficient. Follow a guide around the two km walk among the ruins and visit the old blacksmiths, lime kiln and sugar mill before heading back to the mainland. Once you're back in the city, you'll find plenty more attractions waiting to be explored. A must-visit is South Bank - a popular area among locals and tourists alike for waterside views, art and fine dining. Call in at the shops and pick up some souvenirs or visit the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art for some inspiration. If you're keen on getting active, you might like to spend the two-and-a-half hours it takes to climb the Story Bridge burning off some energy for a reward of fantastic panoramic views. Climbing fans might also like to have a go at scaling the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and abseiling down the other side. Whatever your tastes, you're sure to find something that caters for you in Brisbane.
