Teaching your children to pick up after themselves is challenging enough. But getting your children to brush their teeth effectively is a whole new ballgame. However, it’s an important habit that children must develop early on in order to have strong, healthy teeth for years to come. In fact, the American Dental Association recommends that parents begin cleaning their children’s mouth within the first couple of days after birth. This is because plaque can stick to the gums and cause gum disease. 5 Ways to Get Your Child to Brush
- If your child is under the age of six, you will have to do the brushing for him/her. This is because young children lack the dexterity required to effectively brush their own teeth. The good news is that you can use this assisted brushing time as a teaching tool. Explain to them, as you brush, the proper way to do it.
- Once children are old enough to brush on their own it’s a good idea to teach them to count to a certain number of strokes per side, etc. This will get them into the habit of paying attention to each row of teeth. You can also put on one of their favorite Disney songs and instruct them to continue to brush until the song is over. Make it fun!
- Take them to the store and let them pick out their own brushing and teeth cleaning gear. If your child is able to pick out their own toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash they will feel more responsible, excited, and involved in their oral hygiene.
- Turn teeth brushing time into family fun time. Let your children brush your teeth while you brush theirs. Get the other siblings and even your child’s dolls involved. Have the radio playing and do not stop brushing until the music stops!
- Be enthusiastic! Children are notorious for wanting to emulate what their parents do. If you are enthusiastic every time it’s brushing time your children will follow suit.
Tooth decay occurs fast in children than adults, so teaching them proper dental habits early on is essential. I can not tell you how many children I have come across that have rows of silver teeth well before they turn the age of ten! Too many sticky sweets and not enough brushing can lead to costly dental repair. Do not let your children fall into this same trap.
