High school is a very diverse and dynamic place, where kids in the ninth grade are mixed in with kids who become legal adults at the age of eighteen during their senior year. A high school could be considered a small city within a city. It has most of the functional departments a city would have. It has its own sports teams, a hospital, a police department, and even community service. Some high schools in the United States can have over four thousand kids, which makes them almost as big some small towns in rural America. In order for a city to function it must be able to provide all of its critical services at any given time. A high school works on a similar idea. Whenever classes are in session, all of its functions must be operational due only to the fact that anything could happen at any time given the large number of students with various situations. The health department of a high school is equipped most emergencies. They are not designed to actually completely treat medically related emergencies, but rather to support the hospital by doing their best to stabilize the student before they arrive to the hospital. In order to achieve this, they must be equipped with the most up-to-date medical devices available. These devices must also be fairly easy to operate, since a medical professional might not always be the one operating the device. Therefore, they must be self explanatory for the most part. One new medical device that has been adopted in high schools all over the United States is a pulse oximeter. A pulse oximeter, also known as a pulse ox by some medical professionals, is a medical device that is used to measure the blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate of an individual. The adopting of an oximeter was not an easy task for school districts not because of the actual device, but more because they were looking for one that was easy to use at an affordable cost. Each high school should have one oximeter for every five hundred students. For this reason, the cost for a pulse oximeter is extremely important. A new finger oximeter is smaller than your average cell phone, and operates on standard batteries. The oximeter has been so great in the health department, that the gym teachers have also adopted them as a tool for their athletes.
