If you have ever been in an accident you know how distressing the situation can be. If you have not yet been in one, consider yourself lucky. After an accident several different things may run through your mind and some of these things should be followed through with and some should not. Accident Don't - Do not flee the scene. This may seem obvious but you would be surprised how many hit and runs are reported each day throughout the United States. In fact, it was reported by CBS Denver news that 400 hit and runs are generally filed per month for Denver County alone. A hit and run has extreme ramifications with the law and can result in prison time. Always wait until a police officer arrives and then gives permission for you to leave.
- Do not forget to obtain key information. If you are in a remote area where police may not have access, or the other person involved in the accident is adamant about leaving the scene make sure to get their name, address, driver’s license number, insurance information, and license plate number. If a police officer does come to your aid, be sure to get their business card.
- Do not let the witness get away without getting their information first. You may need this witness to testify for you in a court of law.
- Do not immediately admit fault. The reason for this is that even if it seems it was you who caused the accident there may be other factors that you are not aware. For instance, the other driver may have been slightly impaired.
If you have been injured in an accident do not hesitate to seek out medical care. The panic and adrenaline rush following an accident can mask physical symptoms that will later come up.
