The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) announced that 2006 internet advertising revenue hit nearly $17 billion dollars. More and more companies are spending their money online which is good for websites that offer such services. It is predicted that the advertising dollars will keep increasing. For example, in 1996 only 267 million dollars was spent on the internet. What should a blog or website do to capitalize on the increasing advertising dollars? Before you can offer website advertising you are going to have to accrue lots of visitors. Without visitors why would someone advertise on your site? The more visitors that frequent your site, the more people are interested in spending their money there. Accruing visitors is not easy and you must compete against hundreds of millions of other sites. It takes long hours of work and lots of learning. There are a number of ways to increase your hits. In the blogging world this happens when you write 2-3 quality posts a day and continually advertise these posts for others to read. You can place these articles on free websites that allow you to have a link back to your site. The more articles, the more links, the more visitors. Once you have earned the visitors you now must have some medium for advertisement. The more methods you offer the more successful you will be. For example, a blog could offer custom written articles, links, html space, product reviews and simple posts for money. Having a selection of different methods at different prices is beneficial. Offering a simple online payment method is also very beneficial. Since most online advertisers are internet savvy they will prefer to make these payments online for small amounts. You must either allow for credit card transactions or a free service like Paypal. Since most purchases are impulse by nature you will lose a lot of business if they can’t purchase immediately. Determining what companies should pay is difficult. A link may go for $10-30 dollars a month on smaller sites (i.e. less than 5,000 visitors a month). You may offer 400 word articles or product reviews for $30 and html space for $30 a month. Again, the more visitors you receive the more you can charge. As a recurring theme in your blog you should always consider keeping thing professional. Few advertisers will be interested in damaging their reputation by being associated with racist, sexist, or illegal websites. The more professional you are the more likely you will have the right image that draws companies.
