Built during the golden era of Vijaynagar Empire, Bellary fort in today's time is one of the most popular tourist destination of Karnataka. Located on the top of the Ballari Gudda or the Fort Hill, Bellary Fort was constructed under the instructions of Hanumappa Nayaka. Associated myths: Bellary Fort is associated with some really interesting legends that make its appearance quite fascinating. It is believed that in ancient times Lord Rama met Hanuman and Sugreev at this place while searching for his wife Sita. Some people also say that the French engineer who helped in renovating this fort was hanged here by Hyder Ali, who took over this fort in 1769. Structure of the fort: The amazing Bellary Fort has been divided into two main parts. First part or the Upper Fort was constructed during the rule of the Vijaynagar Kingdom. The main citadel is situated in upper part along with the ruins of some cells and several deep pools of water and cisterns. The Lower part built by Hyder Ali is on the eastern base of the Ballari Gudda. During his rule it was used as the place where all the weapons and artilleries were kept. There were several bastions in the past and one can still its ruins. There is also a Hanuman temple named Kote Anjaneya.
