Many people do not think much about fire research, but it is critical research that aids us in our daily lives. Everything we use on a daily basis has been highly tested to safeguard us from fire. Things from your clothes to the couch you sit on all must pass rigorous fire tests. These tests are critical. There are thousands of fires every year in American's homes. These range from a small trash can to five alarm fires that engulf entire homes. Engineering materials to limit their fire spread characteristics gives people time to escape fires and allows fire fighters to fight fires when they respond. Fire research gathers important data, which is then used by manufacturers to advance the safety of their products. Some testing scenarios require fire fighters to actually take an active part in the lab. A fireman's participation is more hands on. Fire fighters are suited up in full gear with supplemental oxygen, and are sent into burning labs. Their participation is more designed to monitor the health of the firemen during a fire. The rate at which a fire spreads is directly related to the amount of time a fire fighter can withstand the environment. A pulse oximeter is one device that is used by fire fighters during testing. A pulse oximeter, also known as a pulse ox by some medical professionals, is a medical device used to measure blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate of an individual. When a fireman enters a fire, a pulse oximeter is attached to their fingertip and constantly monitors their oxygen levels in their bodies. The information is stored on the pulse oximeter, which can be easily viewed after the testing. A new pulse oximeter is smaller than your average cell phone, and with advances in technology its software allows for high levels of accuracy.
