Although late life hearing loss is often shrugged off as “just part of getting old,” it does not necessarily have to be the norm. Though there are certainly cases where a person is genetically predisposed for hearing loss, many can avoid or reduce the severity of this by taking some simple steps earlier in life to safeguard their ears. Many of these things seem so simple and mundane that they are often overlooked on a day to day basis, but the effects of ignoring them can add up over a person’s life often necessitating the use of hearing aids during older age. One of the biggest contributors to the loss of hearing is sound; loud noises cannot be understated in how quickly they can permanently damage the ear’s ability to function. According to the NIDCD, roughly 15 percent of the population between ages 20 and 69 have experienced hearing loss due to exposure to loud sounds throughout their week. Although it may seem like it’s no big deal, loud noises can have severe consequences when it comes to hearing, especially when they are frequent. Some professions are especially prone to the types of sounds that can permanently affect hearing; daily interaction with lawnmowers, heavy machinery, metal work, etc. will all permanently damage the inner ear eroding the ability to hear over time. Often times workplaces that are prone to consistent loud noises will require some sort of ear protection to be worn for employees. This cannot be overstated enough, do not ignore these pleas to protect the ears. Dealing with the hassle of ear protection early in life could result in dramatically better hearing during later years, so forgo the hankering for a more modest fashion statement and wear your headgear with pride. Another scenario that has become increasingly more detrimental to hearing over the past three decades is high audio volumes with headphones. Australia's National Acoustic Laboratories has found that 25% of people using portable music players consistently listen to music at volumes likely to cause permanent hearing loss. Scientists have also attributed the sudden increase of hearing loss of people in their 30s and 40s to earphone use. As using some sort of headphones has become a daylong experience rather than using them just for working out, it is important to remember to keep the volumes at a reasonably low level. Preventing noise induced hearing loss starts at a very young age, the earlier a person puts the earplugs in and turns the volume down, the less likely it is that they will experience severe hearing loss later in life. Be sure to get a regular hearing test if surrounded by a noisy workplace and be mindful of changes in hearing sensitivity.
