People often believe and think that millionaires were either born rich or born with skills that the rest of us don’t have. Even though there are some millionaires that are born rich and a few who have made millions based upon their skills, the far majority earned their wealth over years of failure. Failure is a key component of success. Thomas Edison didn’t walk out to his barn one day and invent the light bulb on the first try. For many years prior to his success he delivered newspapers, was kicked out of a train and barely earned enough money being a telegraph operator to continue his experiments. Donald Trump’s stories of success are not as rosy as many of us believe. Donald Trump came from a working class family and had to earn his paycheck like the rest of us. He failed, failed, failed a hundred times before having success. If some of the greatest figures of wealth failed numerous times, why do many of us assume it should come easy to us? Unfortunately, today’s generation has not experienced the trials and tribulations of generations past. We had no World War, did not have to engage in grueling farm work which sparked our imagination or suffered through extreme poverty like that seen in the Great Depression. We have been spoiled to a certain extent. Instant coffee to instant gratification has not left us with a sense of stubborn persistence. Earning your way into millionaire status is not easy nor is it free. It requires years of practice, years of creative failure, years of education (whether formal or informal) and a little bit of luck. Since it does take years, it will require your undivided attention and persistence that few people have. Thus the real differences between the wealthy and the average person are their ability to be educated, creative and persistent. Persistence: Persistence is more than simply trying something one or two times and then giving up. Persistence among the elite is about never giving up on dreams and goals. More people fail because they give up before they become rich then they do from any lack of skill. Persistence is about working on your dreams every day and every year until you accomplish them. Creativity: Creativity allows us to develop new ideas by making connections between the elements. A poor man will only see what is displayed in front of him while a creative man will see something new and different. The creative man will figure out how to make it happen. Wealth comes from doing something different or better than everyone else and this requires creativity. Education: There are two types of education and these are formalized schooling and informal schooling. Those who have the ability to attend the most prestigious universities have a better chance at success than the rest of us. However, we can make up this difference by reading and observing the topic of our interest. The more we learn the better we are able to navigate business problems and grow our ideas.
