The research has found that children who drink half-a-pint of milk every day are 40 percent less likely to suffer bowel cancer, commonly known as colorectal cancer, as adults. In the study, carried out by researchers in New Zealand, daily milk consumption showed a significant protective effect against the cancer, which kills 16,000 British people every year. Milk everyday keeps cancer at bay According to the researchers, the key to milk’s anti-cancer effects lies in daily consumption over long periods. “Our results suggest daily consumption of milk in childhood may ¬reduce bowel ¬cancer incidence, possibly by the action of calcium,” UK’s Express quoted Associate Professor Brian Cox, who led the research, as saying. The research authors believe calcium helps kill cells that lead to cancer and accumulating a supply in the system can help to ward off the chances of acquiring the disease. The study, involving a group of students, found that the participants were 40 percent less likely to suffer a tumor later in life if they had milk every day for six years or more. Benefits of milk The latest findings echo earlier evidence from the World Cancer Research Fund that milk protects against cancer. "School milk is hugely important because it ensures children have an adequate supply of nutrients. One glass of milk has the same amount of calcium as a kilogramme of spinach," The Hindu quoted Dr Judith Bryans, director of the Dairy Council, as saying. On the other hand, a spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK said: "The best ways to reduce bowel cancer risk are to keep a healthy weight, drink less alcohol and be physically active." A little about bowel cancer Bowel cancer happens in the parts of your body that break down the food you eat. Two of the main parts of the bowel are called the colon and rectum. Because of this, bowel cancer is also called colon cancer, rectal cancer or colorectal cancer. Prevention and early detection is the key to controlling and curing this cancer. To reduce the risk of bowel cancer, it is best to follow a diet that is low in fat and high in fruits, vegetables and fiber. In the UK alone, more than 36,500 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year. It is the third most common type of cancer in the country and leads to 16,000 deaths per year. The findings were published last week in the 'American Journal of Epidemiology.' For more information check out Cancer
