Traditionally the mentality of “being green” was always one of making an effort, or forfeiting a better result in order to save the planet. For example sorting out your rubbish in to numerous different coloured bins, begrudgingly reading the back of a label to see if you really can recycle the plastic tray the supermarket insisted on placing your meat on or whether it's going to hang around for thirty years, possibly outliving you or investing in a G-wiz. This is what being green used to mean. However, this mentality seems to have changed. It is now easier and less socially deprecating to try and be environmentally friendly. Where once before we were nearly forced in to being green, receiving fines for not recycling, we now have internalised being environmentally friendly. Gone are the days when the government had to tell us to do something about the waste we produce now it is us; the public, telling governments to get tough on environmental issues. The recent election in England saw the first Green MP being voted in to the house of commons; Caroline Lucas won the seat of Brighton Pavilion in May, which is a prime example of this shift of thinking. So is the recent case of a customer complaining to trading standards regarding the excessive use of packing by a supermarket chain. These examples show that we are no longer content with being forced to be green, we want every aspect of our life to be as environmentally friendly as possible. There is no longer the stigma attached to environmentally friendly issues or the people that practise them. No longer are people deemed to be “eco-warriors”, it is now less of a mission to find an enviromentally friendly way of doing everything. There is even a green house clearance Is this a sign of the future? Will all companies soon “go green” or will we see a step back to the days before green went from geek to chic? Only time will tell.
