If you are considering having breast implants you probably are aware that there are a lot of questions you will need to answer for yourself before you undergo any procedure. The most obvious questions patients face include not only deciding what size they want to increase their bust to but also deciding what type of breast implant to get. These questions are certainly important but often they are the only ones patients focus on. Other equally important questions often get glossed over or ignored in the process. Questions such as how to find a qualified plastic surgeon, and how long will it take to fully recover are questions that you need to answer before you move forward. These may not be the exciting questions as you seek a physical change but they certainly are amongst the most important. First- the most important decision you will make regarding breast implants is not in deciding between silicon and saline. It is in deciding upon a plastic surgeon to perform the surgery. Not all surgeons are created equal and not all surgeons specialize in breast implants or even do enough of them to do it flawlessly. This is an area you need to ensure your doctor is a specialist and not just dabbling. The most important screening question you should broach is asking any potential surgeon if they are a member of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. This ensures your doctor has had at least six years of surgical training and at least three years in plastics. Without this membership certification there is no guarantee that your surgeon has had the experience necessary to have the skill set you want. There are plenty of botched cosmetic procedures out there and the biggest reason can be put down to a lack of patient research into the surgeon’s skill level. You should also discuss at length the length with your doctor the length of down time to expect. Many patients gloss over this important fact and find themselves unprepared for the reality of recovery. Any surgery, even cosmetic surgery requires a recovery time that will vary by the patient’s age, general health and other factors including any complications or how many procedures were performed at the same time. Since most cosmetic procedures are done at surgical centers, patients are released from post op as soon as their doctor feels they are out of the anesthesia and functioning well enough to be cared for at home. However you need to bear in mind that just because you can go home does not mean you are prepared to care for yourself or go directly back into your normal activities. You will have drainage tubes, stitches, and bandage wrappings and you will be in some discomfort when you go home. You and who ever will be caring for you will need to be informed about the level of care you will need by fully discussing your recovery period ahead of time with your surgeon.
