Question: Will my hearing aids increase or decrease my level of hearing loss? Answer: The simple answer is No. Hearing aids won’t help to repair any hearing loss you may have already suffered, regardless of how you came to experience the hearing loss. They are designed only to help those people who are suffering from hearing loss. The hearings aids won’t exacerbate the hearing loss, provided they are accurately calibrated to your specific level of hearing loss. This is why it is vital to ensure that you have a qualified hearing aid audiologist help you with the selection of the correct fitting of a hearing aid. Since everyone will have a different level of hearing loss, over-amplification can be an issue if an untrained professional performs the hearing aid calibration. Correctly calibrated hearing aids may make you think your hearing has decreased when you take them out since you’ll become used to the level of hearing you enjoy with them in. Question: Are all hearing aids the same? Answer: Definitely not. From the shape of the hearing aid, to its position in or on your ear there are a wide variety of different hearing aids. After you have had a hearing test and established that you do need a hearing aid, a qualified hearing aid audiologist should work with you every step of the way. This is the only way to ensure that you get a hearing aid that fits correctly and one which will allow you to feel comfortable wearing it. There are hearing aids that are designed to be worn inside the ear as well as those that are designed to be worn behind the ear. There is also the consideration of whether to use digital or analogue hearing aids, which your personal preference and budget will help you to decide on. Question: What is the difference between digital and analogue hearing aids? Answer: Analogue hearing aids convert the sound your hearing aid picks up and converts it into an electrical signal that is amplified and passed through to the earphone. This amplifies all the sounds that are received without discriminating. The digital hearing aids convert the sound into digital rather than electrical signals. These digital signals are then processed by a micro-computer which means that it can be specifically calibrated to a wearer’s hearing loss and hearing needs. The digital hearing aids can be more customised, but there are additional factors to consider when deciding on whether to go digital or analogue.
