With the increase of MP3 players, there is an ever increasing number of young people who are suffering from hearing loss. It is this group that can often have the greatest difficulty accepting the need for a hearing test, and therefore the group that is often most in need of persuasion to take one. One of the most difficult things to accept is that one is losing a sense, whether its sight, hearing or smell. Losing a sense leaves one in a position where we don’t get to fully experience the world and it’s a very scary thought for most people. While many people expect to lose some part of their sight or hearing as they get old, for a young person to contemplate that they might already be afflicted is terrifying. So to keep that terror at bay, many will deny there is a problem long after it’s clear to the people around them. Part of that denial will be the refusal to go and get their hearing, or sight, tested. It’s almost as if the test results will make what they fear most a reality. To be able to put off the tests and therefore the confirmation they dread is something people will find a myriad of excuses. These can range from the sensible, such as being too busy, to the absurd, depending on their level of fear. The most important thing for the people around them to do is use facts to show that their fear is illogical. If a person can be persuaded that the hearing test will help them in the long term, there is a far greater chance that they will go for the test. Even if the hearing does confirm their fears, having that test is a great first step as it can force a discussion of the issues. Once the person has seen their results and accepted that they do have hearing loss there is a good chance that the hearing aid specialist can help them to find the ideal solution. It’s then a matter of changing a person’s perception of how hearing loss will impact their daily life. At the end of the day, it’s not just about the person who needs the test, it’s also about the people that surround them as moral support is key in getting someone to face such intrinsic fears as hearing loss.
