Tour historic sites on holidays to Croatia

Travel & Tourism
If you love breaks that let you indulge your passion for history, why not consider looking into holidays to Croatia?

The country is becoming increasingly popular as a destination for all kinds of holidaymakers thanks to its rich past, diverse landscape and wealth of activities.

Croatia has come under the rule of the likes of the Romans, Venetians and Italians over the centuries, with each new era bringing a host of buildings, pieces of art and monuments that have stood the test of time.

If you've never visited Croatia before, Dubrovnik is perhaps the perfect place to begin.

The capital city's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasting buildings dating back to the 11th century, this part of Dubrovnik is amazingly well-preserved and a haven for tourists looking to soak up Croatian culture.

There are many interesting medieval buildings to see - just a few highlights include the Rector's Palace, which was built in the 15th century and features some fine examples of both Renaissance and Gothic design, along with the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin.

Head to Luzu Square to see the 15th century clock tower and its two bronze figures, which tell the time by striking a bell, and explore other buildings such as St Saviour Church, the Serbian Orthodox Church and Museum and St Blaise's Church.

There are several other Unesco World Heritage sites dotted around the country - so why not make the most of the car hire services available in Croatia and visit some more?

For example, the island of Clovo is home to Trogir, a town built mainly from stone that features some spectacular architecture, most notably its Romanesque churches and buildings designed in the Baroque and Renaissance styles.

Don't miss the sight of the west portal of the Trogir Cathedral - this part of the building is said to be the most significant example of Roman and Gothic art in the whole of Croatia.

If royal residences are more your thing, why not drive to Split to see the striking Diocletian Palace? Built in the Middle Ages, the palace features a number of elements that are thought to signify the birth of new early medieval, early Christian and Byzantine art forms.

Make sure you take the time to explore Split itself - some of the other attractions here include Papalic Palace, the Cathedral of St Domnius and a statue of Gregorius of Nin, a tenth century bishop.

If you're interested in the influence that Italian culture has had on Croatian art, and vice versa, you may want to add a visit to Sibenik to your itinerary.

The area is home to St Jacob's Cathedral, which was constructed in the mid-15th to early 16th centuries and clearly displays influences from both regions.

For a longer view of Croatia's history, Plitvice Lakes National Park is a must-visit. This World Heritage site shows how the flow of water over chalk and limestone deposits over a period of thousands of years have formed a series of natural dams that have created some spectacular caves, lakes and waterfalls.

Several rare animal species live in the park, including bears and wolves, so a trip to the attraction is sure to make for a particularly fascinating leg of your Croatia holiday.
