Mauritius is home to plenty of exciting attractions guaranteed to make for the holiday of a lifetime - and one of these has to be La Vanille Crocodile Park. Situated in southern Mauritius, the nature reserve boasts more than 3.5 hectares of colourful, exotic plants and rare animals. You can go on tours of the park led by experienced guides who can tell you all about its inhabitants - which include crocodiles and giant tortoises. More than 1,500 Nile crocodiles are bred and reared at La Vanille. They all descend from a group of crocodiles originally brought from Madagascar to Mauritius in the 1980s. Meanwhile, visitors will be able to see some of the over 500 tortoises that live at the reserve. These are mainly made up of giant Aldabra tortoises, for which La Vanille is the largest captive breeding centre in the world. The most sizeable tortoise weighs in at an impressive 275 kg. The tortoises have some similarities to those that used to live on Mauritius and nearby Rodrigues before they faced extinction. There are many other creatures to see at La Vanille - why not meet some geckos, iguanas, chameleons, monkeys, turtles, deer, wild boar or frogs? You can also see the Rodrigues fruit bat in the walk-in bat enclosure, along with tens of thousands of insect species at the insectarium, including beetles, moths and butterflies. There are other things to do in this part of the island while on holidays to Mauritius. For more nature-focused fun, why not head to the island of Ile aux Aigrettes, which is home to some of the rarest birds in the world? Among these is the pink pigeon and the kestrel. You might also want to take a trip to the Dutch ruins at Vieux Grand Port or to the seaside resort of Souillac, which boasts a beautiful garden and excellent views of the surrounding coastline. Elsewhere, the Martello Towers are well worth a visit - they were built to represent the end of slavery on Mauritius and the start of a new era of Indian immigration.
