If you enjoy shopping till you drop then you are sure to want to visit the Canadian city of Montreal, where you will find a vast array of retail outlets in a unique underground complex. Known as the underground city, this series of pedestrian walkways has developed over the years from a way to escape the cold winter weather to a hive of activity with shops, restaurants, hotels and other attractions all linked to the network of tunnels. And if you book hostels in the city, you could well find that you have more spending money left over for your shopping excursions. But with 33 kilometres of passageways to explore, it can be difficult to know where to begin - and what to see. If you are staying in centrally-located Montreal hostels then an ideal starting point is the Promenade Cathedral. This large shopping mall is situated on St Catherine Street and is easily accessible from the centre of the city. It is also home to over 100 retail outlets, so it's a good place to start any day of retail therapy. From here, you will be able to gain access to the maze of underground walkways that are lined with shops and you can begin exploring the boutiques, discount stores and high street shops that are all over the city. And if you are concerned about having to walk everywhere then you needn't worry - the underground tunnels are also linked to the Montreal metro, so you can catch a subway train to reach various destinations if your legs are getting tired. You will also find that as a result of its connection to the metro, many of the passageways are open from 05.30am to 01.00am (local time) everyday to coincide with the subway's operating hours, although some access points open and close at different times depending on their location. But if you want to make your Montreal break about more than shopping then you will still be able to make use of its underground network. You can use the tunnels to reach galleries such as the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, to visit the cinema or to enjoy some sporting action at the Olympic stadium.
