Norwegian fjord cruises offer fantastic excursion opportunities

Travel & Tourism
If you're hoping your next cruise takes you to a destination filled with beautiful scenery and some authentic culture, you can't go wrong if you choose to visit the fjords of Norway.

Whether you want to travel with your family, or take a break where you can indulge your passion for walking, you can find both with Norwegian fjord cruises.

When you cruise around the fjords, there are all kinds of places for you to visit during your ports of call. Meanwhile, take in the stunning scenery around you during your time on the water, and make sure to keep your camera handy so you can treasure the landscapes forever.

As you journey to the picturesque region of Geiranger, you'll be in for a treat when you catch sight of the fjord here. Measuring 62 miles long, the inlet courses through glacial scenery and past some local landmarks, including the Seven Sisters waterfall and Mount Dalsnibba - perfect for scaling if you enjoy hiking up mountains for rewarding views from the top.

For some more stunning sights, head on to Tromso, which is known as one of the best destinations in the world from which to witness the Northern Lights.

Meanwhile, if it's some authentic Norwegian culture you're after, call in at the nation's second-largest city - Bergen. The region is renowned for its fish market, so stop off for a seafood lunch before paying a visit to the equally-famous Hanseatic Wharf. This area is protected by Unesco and was the old merchant quarter back in the Hanseatic era.

If you're itching to get your hiking boots back on, Bergen is also a great place for a spot of walking, as it is home to Mount Floyen. If you're feeling less energetic, however, you can always opt to take the funicular railway to the summit instead for some breathtaking views.

History fans might enjoy stopping off in Stavanger and calling in at Norway's oldest cathedral, while there are also Viking monuments and settlements to see. For a true Norse warrior experience, head on to the capital of Oslo, where you can visit the Viking Ship Museum and witness longboats that date back to the year 900 AD.

Other attractions to take in while visiting Oslo include the outdoor museum of Vigeland Park, where you can see more than 150 sculptures created by one of Norway's most famous sculptors, Gustav Vigeland. You might also enjoy stopping off at the 230-year old Hadeland Glassworks to see the craftsmen in action and pick up some beautiful delicate souvenirs.

Whatever you want to do in Norway, you're sure to find something to suit your tastes during a cruise around the fjords.
