Stonehenge is one of the most recognisable historic monuments in the world - and if you're visiting Bath on a short break, it's easy to head to the landmark to see what all the fuss is about. Situated 38 miles away from Bath, the World Heritage site of Stonehenge is a fascinating place to explore. The stone circle's origins go all the way back to around 3000 BC - and although it has been subject to examination by experts for centuries, no one is yet quite sure exactly what its purpose was intended to be when it was constructed by our ancestors. Intriguingly, the remains of Stonehenge include bluestones originating in the Preseli Hills - which are located in Wales. The other rocks that make up the monument are sarsen stones, which are local to the area. There is evidence to suggest that Stonehenge was used as a burial site, as well as to worship the sun. When you visit the site, the audio guides will point out what it is about Stonehenge that has given rise to such theories, as well as explaining the history of the monument and how it is thought it was built. You will also be able to learn more about the various stones and mounds that are not a direct part of Stonehenge, but still form part of the World Heritage area. Visitors are encouraged to make their way around Stonehenge at their own pace, as well as to look out across the surrounding fields and hills for signs of other prehistoric burial mounds and monuments. Indeed, if you're staying in holiday homes in Bath or anywhere else in the region, it is easy enough to travel to these other historic sites to find out more about how our ancestors once lived. These include Durrington Walls, the Winterbourne Stoke Barrow Cemetery and Woodhenge, all of which offer further insights into the prehistoric era. Other points of interest in the region include the numerous white horses and emblems etched into the hillsides, quaint little villages with welcoming pubs and tearooms, and bustling cities such as Salisbury - making for the perfect getaway to this part of the UK.
