If you are planning holidays to Mauritius, you may wish to make sure that you leave time in your schedule to spend a day at Black River Gorges. The island's only national park, this huge and breathtaking area of land has an important role to play in protecting much of the island's remaining rainforest, along with countless native flora and fauna. Managed by the National Parks and Conservation Service, the land has become a haven for a variety of exotic birds, including the pink pigeon, which was once on the brink of extinction. Fans of feathered creatures may wish to ensure they pack a pair of binoculars in their backpack to be in with a chance of spotting some of the park's other winged inhabitants, including the Mauritius kestrel, parakeets and cuckoo-shrikes. In addition to birds, Black River Gorges is also home to the Mauritian flying fox and wild monkeys, whose calls and cries to each other from their treetops are likely to accompany you throughout your journey. The varied landscape and plant life of the park means that you may well be greeted with a different but equally striking view around each corner you turn. Because of this, there is no need for you to come off the park's established trails - and you are also urged not to do so. Additional precautions that you may need to take when exploring Black River Gorges include wearing a pair of sturdy and waterproof shoes, as the paths are prone to becoming muddy and slippery, while your bag should also contain a rain coat, insect repellent and at least one litre of water for each member of your group. The National Parks and Conservation Service urges people to stay together when they visit the area and you will have plenty of opportunity to relax at the site's picnic areas, while there are also information centres available. Following a day's walking and sightseeing, you may be only too glad to return to your hotel and collapse into bed - and Les Pavillons Mauritius could be the perfect place in which to do so. The hotel offers guests views of the striking peninsular Morne Brabant and has been sympathetically built to respect its beautiful island surroundings.
