You have many choices when it comes to whitening your teeth. There are several different products and you can choose to whiten your teeth at home or at your cosmetic dentist’s office. Whitening your teeth at home or at the dentist’s office will whiten your teeth by several shades. There are differences to each and the results differ. Teeth Whitening at the Dentist’s Office Many cosmetic dentists choose to whiten their patients’ smiles with the Sapphire Teeth Whitening treatment. This treatment uses a special gel that is applied to each individual tooth and then is activated by a special light. The light helps whiten teeth 2 to 5 more shades than when the gel is used on it’s own. The light used to activate the gel is in the blue range of the light spectrum. The blue light activates the stains on teeth and the gel absorbs the blue light. Along with the hydrogen peroxide in the gel, the blue light and the gel break down the stains that dull and discolor teeth resulting in faster bleaching and better results. At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits If you would like an at-home teeth whitening kit, your cosmetic dentist can give you the Sapphire at-home teeth whitening kit. This kit uses the same teeth whitening gel as the in-office treatment, but does not use the special blue light to activate the gel. The gel whitens teeth by several shades on its own, but is more efficient with the use of the special blue light. The Sapphire teeth whitening kit comes with custom made trays to specifically fit your mouth. These trays hold the gel in place while you whiten your teeth at home. Unlike the in-office treatment where your cosmetic dentist skillfully applies the gel to each tooth, the at-home kit uses trays filled with the gel. There is one tray for your top teeth and another for your bottom teeth. The trays are comfortable and easy to place in the mouth. Over the Counter Teeth Whitening Treatments Over the counter teeth whitening treatments are easy to purchase and there are many to choose from. These treatments do not use the same effective gel as the Sapphire Teeth Whitening treatment. The gel used in the over the counter treatments are weak and tend to not whiten teeth nearly as well as the in-office and at-home Sapphire treatments. The gel may cause tooth sensitivity as well. The over the counter treatments that use teeth whitening gel use one size fits all trays. These trays rarely fit anyone’s mouth and may pinch your cheeks and gums. The trays are usually too large and are uncomfortable. Because the trays are too large, the gel does not get evenly dispersed on the teeth and the whitening results may be inconsistent.
