Former IT staffer was sentenced to one year and one day in prison for stealing confidential information belonging to his colleagues and use the data to make money filling out a survey of health. Cam Giang, 31, was released from University of California San Francisco Medical Center this year after investigators discovered he was using names, birthdays and social security numbers of other UCSF staff to fill hundreds of surveys. The idea was to collect online vouchers worth $100 each. worked in the medical center IT department for five years and had access to confidential information through his job, according to court records. From January to April this year, 382 completed the study Giang before the company who paid for them, StayWell, figured out what was happening. StayWell UC was offering gift certificates to employees as an incentive to complete a health, but grew wise to the scam. Company received complaints from employees who could not complete the questionnaire. When StayWell tested, it turned out that Giang has completed surveys on their names. In court documents, the lawyer said Giang received 218 vouchers(total value $21,800), but was never able to cash them in Giang, used only a portion of Social Security numbers of his colleagues when filling out the survey, his lawyer says in a memorandum of appeal. Mr. Giang never wanted to steal their identity, and other than losing the opportunity to participate in marketing studies, StayWell, the victim did not lose anything, says the Oct. 20 memorandum asks the judge trial instead of prison. Giang is depressed since his arrest and tried to commit suicide, reads the memorandum. Giang guilty to charges of wire fraud and identity theft on July 22. He was sentenced Wednesday, Judge Jeremy Fogel of U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
